Themselves Alone

I dreamt about the election last night; more specifically, I dreamt about Sinn Fein’s performance in it. I know, I know. In service to you lot, I’m even blogging in my sleep. Not even your mothers love you as much as I do.

It may have come from the chat I had with Articulately Subversive Brother last night (I have an Excitably Subversive brother too, whom I tend to dub Nearest Brother, because he’s a mere ten years older than me. Someone once thought he was my dad. The larfs!). We, like the conscientious little fuckers we are, turned to talk of the Big E, the decider of our country’s not-too-distant-future, and we went through the various party options like the dismissive, opinionated whingebags we also are.

We got to Sinn Fein eventually. We were chomping at the bit to do so, seeing as they’re the only interesting party.

“It moulds up my sandwiches and soils my breeches,” says Articulately Subversive Brother, “that we’ve spent the last twenty years trying to get Sinn Fein into government in the North, only for our representatives down here to turn around and reject any notion of joining them in government down here.”

And y’know, he’s hit the nail into the hangover, there. It’s true. What was Bertie Ahern whispering to Ian Paisley when we eventually got Dr. No to sit down at the same table as Grizzly Adams? Rather you than me, old chap?

What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, my mother might say, and while I don’t know what she’s on about because I’ve never been served goose in my life, unless chicken leftovers are a viable substitute, I must say that we are a bunch of hypocritical arses. When it comes to the North, we cry, “Let them eat crow!” while we down here feast on brown envelopes in a mock-socialist soup (incidentally, I firmly believe that Bertie Ahern got his words mangled – it runs in the family – and said he was a socialist when he clearly meant socialite. Have I said that to you before?). The other parties ask us to say no to Sinn Fein; “We’re the real republicans” say Fianna Fail, while the PDs are reduced to a very thick consistency and a cry of “Why would you want to vote for gun-toting hippies, anyway? Fucking provisional branch of the flower children, they are. Social housing my arse!”. But… and here comes the genuine brow-furrowing from your political corr(d)espondent…
Sinn Fein are a young party, and a growing party, and while they’re not ready for government yet, they very well may be in a decade or so. So when, if ever, should we accept their background as a party of violent protest? When should we move on? A sizeable portion of the population has done so already, if Sinn Fein’s opinion poll results are to be believed. And not all of them are rebel song singing freaks from rural Cork, either.

Don't trust em, not with your goldfish let alone your vote. Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed all their fun shenanigans over the years. They wound up everybody from the Brits to the Unionists to the Americans. But this is serious stuff here. They are a shifty lot and no mistake. So they are...

a certain postal order pastor and dodgy doctor already bellowed the same utterance.
Pot calling the Kettle black if you ask me. Sure they are all a shower a c**ts , all shifty, make no mistake.

I'm glad to see some southerners are actually saying Sinn Fein and not saying murderers in the same sentance. I'm from a republican area but I'm not a shinner, I'm not a stoop either but it riles me to see the pure hate that some in the Rep. have for SF.

What did SF ever do to them? People say they're just criminals, in comparison to Irish politicians, past and present, Todays SF pussy cats

Maybe I have to read less Dublin blogs.

Hmm... shinners are doing what they've always done, targetting seats not of FF or FG or PDs but of Lab, GP, SP and Indeps. So the possibility of a usefully sized coalition of left of centre interests is less likely, rather than more likely, as they succeed.

It boils down to money in some sense.
Adams raised a shiteload of cash in the U.S. for his party, a great deal more than other politicians have access to and that doesn't sit well with other politicians. You can't blame them for objecting to donations or resources outside Ireland.
Other than that, crying murderer is a quick way to dismiss and silence SF. There also may be a degree of flinching from all island politics.
SF has a large number of supporters in the North. They're not going anywhere and will have to be recognized eventually.
Great post, Sweary.

murder not the issue now said...

Sinn Fein - a group of politically naive, power-hungry national socialist "left-wingers" (remember Germany in the early 1930's??)
Sinn Fein is like the student in the class who copied the others & tried to appear the smartest...What a turn-around with their policy on corporate tax!! ..God they have some strong convictions! (no pun intended)How would they fund a more equal "rights-based society".
Go back to school lads, more lessons from Fianna Fail, before ye get to re-write history.
John Hume, who?

SF are not in a 'government' in Northern Ireland and any 'group' that claim that Jean McConville's murder was not a criminal act should think again about power and legitimacy..

Yes guys, why not vote SF. Wouldn't that be like the Germans voting for the Neo-Nazi Party, or Afghanistan letting Osama Bin Laden become President. The Farq in Columbia could also take power ( after all, they learnt a lot from SF already, they could help each other, couldn't they)
Please guys, give us a break. Terrosrism and violence can NEVER be forgotten, nor forgiven!

There has been a notable grassroots exodus from SF in Derry & other areas in the past 18 months. Too much polish, not enough brass. How long would they be in govt b4 the general public realise the lack of distinct substance there?

i love the cartoon on twenty major's blog today...Sinn Fein should stick to door to door sales, now that the arms trade is too risky; sher can't they buy more property in Eastern Europe & in the UK. It would be that bit more credible anyway. - sinnfeinproperties.ie

Well for me...refusing to condemn the killing of a garda during a robbery?

Fuck them. I dont care if they're good enough for the north..i have no control over that. I can have my say here.

Fuck them. Sort that one out first.

Oh and their economic policies are just mental.

Medbh said...

So no one will entertain the idea of SF's place in politics until after Adams and McGuinness are out? Or are SF forever barred without merit?

me said...

they are banned until they stop condoning murder.

Oh...is it ok to condone murder? Is that the Ireland we're living in?

Great!

A post about the Shinners and everybody goes anonymous!

If i had a blog,i would use my name.I do not fall for what SF are selling. If u live abroad, you can understand why G.Adams can make millions in a weeknend in the U.S. talking it up. BUT we live here, so respect our intelligence and stop telling us how pure a socialist united Ireland could be like. Sort my fence Gerry or i'll tell Bertie...Enda's at the hairdressers, God love him

Just because he said he'd never go into government with them doesn't necessarily mean he won't. Hardly renowned for being true to his word now is he.

Memories are short and distance allows the use of rose tinted lenses...

The current crop of FF & FG'ers are only a couple of generations from their Revolutionary Freedom Fighter/ Terrorist (take your pick!) roots...

The ANC had a neat line in social terrorism (necklacing anyone?) before they turned the tables on the white Afrikaaners... Now they are the toast of the free world...

Little doubt the shinners are just beginners at this democracy stuff - vague, ill-conceived policies - but they're learning fast - another election or 2 and they'll be feted by Bertie or Biffo or whoever on all sides - and will be welcomed into the fold...

I also suspect that the will gradually - like the shifting continental plates - move to a more acceptable rehetoric in pursuit of power - you'll find less mention of "Marxist Socialist Republic" as the smell of power increasingly tickles their taste-buds...

In addition, I suspect we'll all be better off because of it...

Exactly. "Oh there was a war on .." - fuck off.

This is a party who were vehemently anti-drug in public while touting for the older generations' votes in the North but whose "other half" were knee capping, beating, murdering and running out of town anyone who competed with the IRA's drug sales operation.
This is the party whose levels of ethicacy are so high that not one of their members or supporters (according to them) has ever been guilty of anything they were accused of, whether that be murder, money laundering, racketeering.
This is the party that stuttered a begrudged "help the police, but not necessarily directly" about the killers of a bar doorman (the killers are known to the Sinn Fein leadership) and stood by as his surviving family were harassed out of their homes for having the audacity to demand justice.

I don't think even the Irish Republic is ready for that. Sinn Fein's brand of democracy is not equitable to all, just their own.

Peace is the new game in town folks. But close up & inside the party, fear is the tool. (Go to a meeting in your local cumann, see the jostling). Talking about tools, what do you think of Mary Lou McDonald? Chic is certainly not a word i'd use but she is leading the marketing phase, selling SF to the kids who don't connect SF with intimidation, knee-capping, smuggling, laundering, etc.
Wait for the educational computer programme or robot that will teach your grandchildren - "When Sinn Fein brought freedom to a troubled land...."
30 years of murder, for what exactly?? ..maybe the SDLP were onto something back when..

Come back full time, Sweary! Now! Is a 3G card too expensive? Can you take out the Golf and do some war-driving? Anything? We are missing your regular posts (and your put-downs of tools who comment - eh, even if that's me).

I voted for Sinn Féin. They are the only group I think are able to do anything about anything in my Area (Cork). They are down to earth working class stiffs like myself.

terrylanded said...

Sinn Fein are down to earth because they have put so many in it!

They are the inarticulate debating wing of a street gang. They have no political credibility on any issue outside of the Northern process.

Just looking at the election as the votes come in, it looks like the shinners are being found out.

Their leader can't even vote in this country!!

They put down debate and dissent within their own party. How do you think they would cope/deal with a country?

Sinn Fein! Ahahahahahahah. Ahahahahah. Oh Jaysus me sides.

I think the problem Sinn Fein have is that pretty much everyone down here that is ever going to vote for them is now voting for them.

The Swearing Lady said...

Ah, by that logic they wouldn't have lost seats, would they?

True on the anonymous comments. Come on lads, pin your colours to the mast! Or your revolutionaries to the stocks or whatever.

Still think that in a couple of decades we'll see a Sinn Fein that have shifted to the right... in more ways than one. I certainly wouldn't hand them the reins right now; it's ridiculous to suggest that a party's roots should never be forgiven or forgotten... look at Fianna Failure, for fuck's sake! Time will tell. A lot of the Shinners are young idealists; they might yet prove of worth to the country.

I think Mary Lou's problem was that she wasn't grass roots enough. I do wonder what attracts so many women to Sinn Fein.

And as for broadband; damn you all, I was in Galway ag votail. And sick, apart from that. I'm wireless enabled and blogging from the Carrigaline Court. I'm, like, their writer in residence. Now either send me an email or buy me a coffee; I'm lonely.
